What Should You Have In Your Equine First-Aid Kit?

All horse owners will know that horses are accident prone.  As an owner, it is your responsibility to give your horse the best care and attention. Keeping a well thought out first aid kit in your horse’s stable is essential. We have compiled a list of items to buy for your equine first aid kit.

  • A few pairs of latex gloves
  • A clean towel
  • Wire cutters: Wire cutters may be needed, especially if you have a wire fence that your horse could possibly get caught in.
  • Tweezers
  • Hoofpick: This is used to remove objects stuck in your horse’s hooves/shoes. See how you can address any hoof problems your horse may know.
  • Flashlight
  • Hemostat: This is to remove splinters, thistles, and burrs from your horse’s skin.
  • Saline solution and salt: This is used for washing out wounds
  • Scissors: Scissors are useful in a  kit to cut tape and bandages.
  • Antiseptic wound ointment: This is also used to wash out wounds and skin infections. Buy a product such as Betadine.
  • Antibacterial ointment or zinc oxide cream: This is used for cuts, skin irritations, cuts, sunburn on your horse’s nose and skin irritation.
  • Bandages and bandage materials: You need bandages to protect wounds, support muscles and hold ice packs. Stock the following: self-sticking bandages, Elastoplast, medical tape, stretch cotton dressing, gamgee cloth,and cotton will.
  • Ice packs: Ice packs are ideal for when a horse has sore or injured muscles to prevent and reduce swelling.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol can be used to sterilize instruments, such as scissors.
  • Digital thermometer
  • Lubricant such as vaseline: To help insert the thermometer.
  • Book on first aid for horses: A book explaining basic symptoms and causes of diseases and injuries will come in handy.
  • A list of emergency phone numbers.
