Taking care of your horse’s hooves are extremely important –
especially if you live in a dry, sandy environment with little moisture in the
air. As with your nails, you need to take care of them to prevent painful and
unsightly conditions. Your horse could be in serious pain that needs immediate
attention. Here’s how:
What are the causes of dry hooves?
- Poor, low protein nutrition
- Dry, arid environments
- Genetics
- Hoof disease such as Laminitis. (See: How to prevent Laminitis)
- Being reared on marshy soil and moved to a drier climate
- Standing in a wet environment for prolonged periods
Symptoms:
- White, chalky substance on the hoof hairline
- Split hoof
- A horn that comes across as hard and stony
- Hooves that easily cast
How do you prevent dry hooves?
- Ensure your horse receives an adequate intake of protein and amino acids with Twydil Racing
- Quality horse nutrition goes beyond ensuring healthy hooves. Feed your horse a healthy, balanced diet
- Ensure your horse has access to moisture/water, especially if your horse is recovering from a disease such as Laminitis.
- Use Redlands Hoof Dressing to prevent moisture loss
- Exercise your horse daily to encourage blood flow.
- Ensure regular “pedicures” by having your horse’s hooves trimmed regularly
Ensure you have a happy, healthy horse by taking care of
their hooves – just like you’d take care of your feet. At the end of the day, a
healthy horse is a happy horse!
